Eye examinations at Village Eyes Optometry in West Los Angeles are designed to be comprehensive.  Regular dilation is always recommended to more fully access the health of the eyes. An eye exam begins with a thorough history and a discussion of the  main reason for visiting the office as well as any other issues that the patient is having with their eyes.  Family history plays a part in the diagnosis of many eye diseases such as glaucoma.  A patient's work environment affects their vision as well.  Patients that spend a significant amount of time on the computer are often bothered by dry eyes and focusing issues.

In addition to accurately measuring vision, it is important to design a proper prescription so it best suits a patient's needs.  A full strength prescription is often what is needed for driving and night time vision, but it can be more powerful than is needed when looking at a computer screen that is positioned only two to three feet in front of the patient.  This is where the doctor needs to exercise his or her judgement to arrive at a prescription that fulfills the needs of the patient.

A thorough eye examination tests for glaucoma, eye muscle problems, or any evidence of astigmatism, myopia or hyperopia.  In addition, it is important to address the near vision needs of patients as they age and begin to have near vision focusing problems.

The eyes are examined from the front to the back and in between.  The front part of the eye is examined with a special microscope called a "slit lamp".  Proper neurological function is measured by monitoring the pupils to make sure that they react normally.  The insides of the eye are measure using special ophthalmic instruments that can allow the doctor to see the entire back part and insides of the eye.  Digital photos are often recommended to best allow the doctor to ensure the health of the eyes.  The blood vessels within the eyes are checked for signs of diabetes, hypertension and other vascular conditions such as elevated cholesterol.  The eyes are checked for any signs of inflammation, infection, allergies, dryness or anything else that can contribute to eye discomfort.

Should a problem be detected, the eye doctor will either treat it or refer the patient to a specialist for further consultation.  Should a specialist be recommended, the area of specialty can be within the eyecare field or to another medical provider, such as an internal medicine specialist or cardialogist as is the case if a vascular problem has been detected by an inspection of the retinal vessels.

Eye care referrals can be to retinal specialists, corneal specialists, cataract surgeons, neuro-ophthalmologists, Lasik surgeons or oculo-plastic surgeons depending upon the problem that is diagnosed by the eye doctor.
